This Friday: Bullets and Octane Do Atlanta

These guys are some friends of mine, I’ve mentioned them before, but I think it was in that new music debate that got erased. They’re playing this friday in Atlanta, at some place called Center Stage. You guys should check them out. The singer, Gene(background, pouring beer into girls mouth), used to play drums for my band in highschool, called The Unappreciated Teenage Superheroes. The bass player, Brent (foreground, making a fist) was in another band we played around with, called This Side. The guy who will be selling merchandise, Jason a.k.a. Spark One Duh? (not pictured) is also a friend. He still lives in STL, and hosts a Hip Hop night every Thursday. He always calls me out, and makes me freestlye when I’m there.

If I’ve got the story straight, Bullets and Octane just walked out on their contract with RCA because they didn’t get some kind of recording bonus they were being enticed with by the label, for making their second RCA album. So they took the album, and they’re hoping to sell 40 copies a night at something like $5 a pop, to show RCA they could make more money on their own.

So go, and support! If you tell Jason or Gene that you’ve always been a fan of The Unappreciated Teenage Superheroes, they’ll probably let you bang groupies (see photo) with them. Jason says, when they’re on tour, even the merch-man has groupies. Also, they like to drink a lot, and travel with their own beer supply. I don’t know what their arrangements are, but they may even appreciate a place to crash.

They’re really big in the UK. Greg’s probably seen them before. He probably even has an autographed copy of the issue of Black Velvet they graced the cover of. See How their name is way bigger than Jon Bon Jovi’s? That’s how big they are.

Jimmy Valentine is a hilarious genious. He's a real brainiac, but you wouldn't know it because he's so goreous and totally not nerdy. He fluxuates between a resemblance of fat and skinny Marlon Brando, but even when he's Fat Brando, the chicks are all over him. And he can draw so good, it's sexy. He's also a real gangster rapper from the ghetto who had to pull himself up from the boot straps to escape the poverty striken streets of Normandy, but he still goes back once in a while to use his parents pool, and he still owes his grandma for paying for college (Thanks, Omie. Good lookin' out! I'll get a job one day. I promise).

  1. I will try and make it, and see who else wants to go. I’ve never heard of them. They look like fine upstanding young gentlemen.

Please tell me the name of a Unappreciated Teenage Superheroes song and I will repeatedly scream it out in between songs.

  2. One song was actually called “Frustration Face”. Let’s see, there was “Another Fuckin’ Freshman Year” Probably the most memerable title would be “Shrunken Heads”. That one was the funkiest jam. Gene played with wire wisks on that song, with like, a New Orleans style street beat (he was taught to play by his dad, who is a jazz drummer). If you yelled “Shrunken Heads and Marlboro Reds” , I think Gene would recognize that, but that’s a long title to jack-assininely yell out at a concert. But unfortunatley I think it’s the only title I feel positive he’d remember. Brent’s band, who was way more popular than ours, even tried to steal me, to be their singer after they heard me do that song. I had some pretty crazy vocals stylings and lyrics. I could crack my voice in a real weird way back then. I chanted some voo-doo stuff I learned off of TV, and I made it rhyme. Lodi dodi Davis! Lets see, it went like this:

Ol’ John Brown you monkey, you.
I shoulda known better than a’ trussed you.
I gave you my hand an’ you done broken my arm
    I’d a never thought you’d a done me harm,
but I’ll fix you up right when I go to yell
some incantations for my jiggaboo spell,
ol’ John Brown you disrespected me
now your shrunken heads grownin’ on my voo-doo tree.

Yeah, I didn’t care much for political correctness then either. I was just making up some bullshit that sounded funky. Kris had written the bassline, and told me, “Make up some swampy lyrics” So I did, and he said, “Shit, that’s good. Let’s start a band.” So we did. I don’t remember where we found Gene at all. He was like, 15 years old. We were 18. He must have been a friend of the guys from This Side, whom we worked with at Kentucky Fried Chicken. Gene was a bad-ass 15 year old drummer, double bass peddles, and all kinds of shit on his kit.

  3. I recommend people clicking on the Black Velve link. I like it when their pictures switch to black and white. It really shows the artsy side fo the band.

  4. I think its awesome that Skid Row still influences rock and roll, as those Black Velvet pictures will attest.

  5. I haven’t listened to any Skid Row in ages. I might have to have a hair metal day on WMP tomorrow. If that’s OK with you Buzz. What’s with you dissing the Hoff on me today? lol

  6. Are you for real about that Towncar? I want a picture. Ton-Ton’s would love to take a joyride in Uncle Jimmy’s machine! Was there extra leg room built in to fit Tommy’s business?
