New Respect for Aaron Brooks?

Wow, I never thought I would say that again after Aaron Brooks’ debacle on Monday Night Football, but take a look at what he had to say in an interview with Westwood One’s Jim Gray:

JG: Do you think that the league has dealt with the Saints fairly throughout this whole tragedy?

AB: No (pause), not at all. I feel that more should have been done. And if they want to put the burden on the owner, I think some needs to fall on the Commissioner, on the NFL. I think everybody’s involved in the situation. I felt like the Commissioner should have came down and spoke to us immediately after it happened – regardless if anyone, whether it was the coach or owner who denied him the right to come down, I thought he should have came down anyway. Because he’s first of all the Commissioner of the NFL. Everything goes through him and the owners and our team needed to be addressed from that standpoint. And I think a lot of it has been swept under the rug. I think it was more of a political platform than anything. And I say that because our first home game was in New York after we just finished traveling from Carolina and other places to play a home game in New York. And when we get there, we got the Commissioner, we got the President, we got all these politicians on the football field in our way so that we can’t warm up. So, I took it personally. I had had to cuss him out. I told him [NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue]: ‘Get the hell off the football field.’ And I thought that was [b.s] because it wasn’t about that. It was a great cause, and I hope all the money went to all the shelters that were needed but I just thought it was [b.s.] and I think that they (inaudible) enough to help us out in the situation. And for those who don’t understand, come down to San Antonio to see what our conditions are like and what we are going through, and see our facility is being shuffled from month to month. And, it’s just bad. And, it’s just uncalled for. The league is worth over billions of dollars and you can’t accommodate a football team that’s probably worth over $600 million better than what we’ve been treated. I just think it’s [b.s.], Jim.

System Would Let Gamblers Bet and Bet and Bet on Game
By PETER SANDERS

LAS VEGAS — Gamblers watching an Indianapolis Colts game here may have a hunch that, on the next play, star quarterback Peyton Manning will throw a long bomb to receiver Marvin Harrison for a touchdown. But right now there is nothing they can do about it — casino sports books don’t accept bets on individual plays.

That may be about to change. Boosted by improved technology that makes it easier to take bets on every play in a sporting event — rather than just the outcome — gambling-technology companies are on the brink of launching new products they hope will entice gamblers at casinos to keep wagering throughout hours-long games.

Chad Johnson confuses me

I love Chad Johnson. He’s one of the best receivers in football today. But what exactly did he mean by this?

TO: I got you baby?

Maybe that’s not a question mark. Maybe it’s an exclamation point. Maybe he was too tired after burning the Indy defense on that TD catch.

Does he mean that he has TO’s back, and he just can’t express himself clearly because he was too excited?

Does he mean that he has TO’s number, that he owns him, because he is scoring touchdowns while TO is doing pushups in his driveway?

If you saw him write this live, you saw that it took him a real long time to write it down. You know he prepped himself to do it. Why is it unclear? C’mon Chad, tell us what you mean.

Week 11 Predictions

It’s upset week. I’m 17-9.

Arizona at St. Louis (-8) – Yeah, right. Rams.

Carolina at Chicago (+3) – Upset #1.

Detroit at Dallas (-8.5) – I believe in Dallas. They will take the NFC East straight up.

Jacksonville (-4) at Tennessee – Poor Titans.

Miami at Cleveland (-2.5) – When its crap vs crap, the crap wins. Brown is the color of crap.

New Orleans (+8.5) at New England – Upset #2. Aaron Brooks will have a big game against a hurting Patriots.

Oakland (+6) at Washington – Upset #3. The return of Randy Moss, and Collins throws 0 interceptions.

Philadelphia (+7) at N.Y. Giants – Upset #4. Mike McMahon is the hero.

Pittsburgh (-3.5) at Baltimore – Duh.

Tampa Bay at Atlanta (-6.5) – After being embarrassed by Green Bay, Atlanta’s not going to lose to a phony Bucs team.
Seattle (-12.5) at San Francisco – Poor San Fran.

Buffalo at San Diego (-12.5) – Tomlinson has another trifecta.

Indianapolis at Cincinnati (+5.5) – Upset #5. I just have a feeling.

N.Y. Jets at Denver (-14.5) – J-E-T-S SUCK SUCK SUCK.

Kansas City (-6.5) at Houston – Final score 42-3.

Minnesota (+5) at Green Bay – Upset #6. Brad Johnson is awesome (snicker).

Still down on the Colts

Everybody’s all over the Colts this season. In the preseason, I even picked them as the SuperBowl winners (against the Falcons).

But I’m tired of hearing about how great they are. I read today that the teams that they have beaten have a combined winning percentage of .321. Wow. That’s real impressive. They’ve beat 9 teams that lose two-thirds of the time. Here’s the NFL’s conference standings: http://www.nfl.com/standings/conference. Notice how the #2 team in the AFC, the Broncos, have a .524 strength of victory.

To Dave (our resident Jacksonville fanboy)’s credit, Jacksonville’s strength of victory is .481.

Of course, all these stats are total crap, because the Saints’ strength of victory is the highest in the league at .611.

Week 10 Predictions

So far, I am 8-4 for picks.

Chiefs at Bills (-2.5) – Kansas City is over-rated.
Redskins at Bucs (-1) – Tampa Bay is even more over-rated than Kansas City.
Patriots (-3) at Dolphins – The Pats don’t lose two weeks in a row. Especially not to a team that embarrassed them last year.
49ers at Bears (-13) – Oh boy what a game. The Bears are the best team in the NFC North, but that’s not really saying much. It’s enough to beat the 49ers, though.
Vikings at Giants (-9.5) – Eli at home.
Cardinals at Lions (-3.5) – I still believe in Detroit. Joey Harrington is #1!
Ravens at Jaguars (-6.5) – Boller’s back! Baltimore rejoices. Losers.
Texans at Colts (-18) – Holy crap, look at the line.
Jets at Panthers (-9) – Are the Panthers the best team in the NFC? We’ll see when they go up against the Falcons.
Broncos (-3) at Raiders – Tough one to call. I’ll take the home team.
Rams at Seahawks (-6.5) – Bulger and Holt are back. This is about the time the Seahawks start showing that they can’t win consistently, too.
Packers at Falcons (-9) – Dave likes the Packers. He “just has a feeling” about this game. So do I.
Browns at Steelers (-7.5) – Please.
Cowboys at Eagles (-3) – Another week of TO at home gloating.

Terry Bradshaw, NO’s only hope?

Terry Bradshaw interested in buying Saints
Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw said Wednesday he wants to put a potential ownership group together that would attempt to buy the New Orleans Saints and keep them in Louisiana, where Bradshaw grew up.
“I’m supporting the citizens of Louisiana who don’t deserve to lose the Saints because of a hurricane,” said Bradshaw, who starred for Louisiana Tech before winning four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Now that is a great idea. The best idea I’ve heard about the Saints’ future since this whole thing started.

I would imagine Bradshaw has some clout around the NFL. He and his investors ought to start putting pressure on Benson. I know Tom wants to give the Saints to his granddaughter and all, but I bet a big wad of cash is an even better inheritance than an incompetant football team with fans who now absolutely despise your family.

I have to remind myself that good things don’t happen to the Saints. But I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that Terry Bradshaw is the Grand Marshall of Endymion or Bacchus come February.

In defense of Bob Stoops

Bob Stoops immediately transformed an Oklahoma program coming off an 3-win season to a national power. The Sooners have been to four BCS bowls in five years, including a national title and three appearances in the national championship game.
Currently, he is leading a team to a bowl game that has played more freshmen than any other team in the nation. The Sooners’ three losses have come against TCU, UCLA and Texas. Those teams have lost two games combined.
Not only is Stoops a top-10 coach, he’s probably in the top five.
