Instead of Katrina, allow me to remind everyone that football season begins today. Thank goodness. It could not come soon enough.
I’m in 3 Fantasy Leagues this year, and I’m very happy with my players in each. Here’s my rosters.

ESPN.com – NFL – Saints want to resume negotiations with Louisiana
New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson wants to resume negotiations with the state, possibly by the end of the summer, on a deal to keep the team in Louisiana.
What the heck? This is making me nuts. Can someone back home fill me in on how the fans are handling this? It seems like a rollercoaster.
In other news, I will cheer when Aaron Brooks takes the bench and Gamblin’ Adrien McPherson comes on the field tonight.
Deuce signs rich 7-year extension
Deuce McAllister agreed to a seven-year contract extension with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday, a deal that McAllister said would make him one of the highest paid running backs in the NFL. “I basically know that they’re putting everything on my shoulders and I’m big enough that I can carry it,” McAllister said. “I want the pressure. I want the ball because I want to get us in the playoffs where we haven’t been” during McAllister’s four years as a pro.
The deal was announced a half-hour before the Saints’ first mandatory meeting of training camp, although McAllister said he never planned to hold out.
Pay the man, dammit. He’s worth it.
Oh, and:
Jammal Brown, the Saints top pick in this year’s draft, did not show up Thursday night. He became the Saints’ sixth top pick in a row to report late because of a contract holdout. Brown and injured fourth-round pick Chase Lyman, who is injured, were the only two players who did not show up.
There should be a set salary for rookies, depending on the round in which they were taken. They get that salaray for one year, then they can negotiate a better deal, depending on how well they played their first season.
I was a huge fan of the Saints trading up in the draft and taking Pac-Man Jones. Good thing I’m not the GM, I guess. |
ESPN.com – NFL – Louisiana meets payment deadline to keep Saints
NEW ORLEANS — The state handed the New Orleans Saints a check for $12,415,267.53 Tuesday, its annual multimillion dollar payment to keep the team in Louisiana, according to Louisiana Superdome official Bill Curl.
Poor Louisiana. They still have to pay this back, and where is it going to come from? They can’t take it from education, there’s nothing left to take? I guess you LA folks will start seeing some new taxes. What they should do is tax auto dealerships.
What the hell is going on in New Orleans? Sure, he’s 34 years old. He was also one of the more effective CBs we had. Who do they plan on replacing him with?
Also, since we like players with injury problems (such as the OT we took in the first round), why aren’t we going after Peter Boulware?
And what about Ty Law?
ESPN.com – NFL – Quick out: Hakim spurns Chiefs, likely joining Saints
Demonstrating once again that the long green typically trumps long relationships in the NFL, veteran free-agent wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim on Friday afternoon backed out of a contract agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs, a deal that would have reunited him with head coach Dick Vermeil. It is believed that Hakim, who had recently visited with New Orleans officials, will now sign with the Saints.
I’m not the biggest Az-Zahir fan, but we do need a wide receiver and a return man.
St. Paul Pioneer Press | 06/10/2005 | Moss rates Collins over Culpepper
Randy Moss says his new quarterback with the Oakland Raiders, Kerry Collins, is better overall than his former quarterback, Daunte Culpepper of the Vikings.
Moss, traded by the Vikings to the Raiders this spring, said so during an ESPN “SportsCenter” interview.
“When it comes to athleticism, Daunte has Kerry beat by a large margin,” the controversial wide receiver said. “But Kerry has pocket presence and knows how to read defenses. So Kerry has a slight step over Daunte.”
This will be a monster year for good old Vodka Collins. Randy says.
Oh, Henry: Adams says Titans want ex-Vol – Thursday, 05/26/05
“We’re interested in Henry,” Adams said yesterday from the NFL Meetings in Washington, D.C. “He wants to get out of Buffalo. We think he has a lot of ability. We think he has four good years left. Because of where he went to college I think he’d be real popular with the fans. I think he’d be a real good addition.”The Titans and Bills first began discussing a trade involving the former University of Tennessee star during last month’s NFL Draft, and the two sides continued dialogue on the subject into last week.
The Bills haven’t moved away from their demand for a third-round pick in next year’s draft in exchange for Henry. So far the Titans haven’t been willing to go that high. They offered a fifth-round pick for Henry on draft day.
Does Tennessee want to start Henry though? I thought they were going with Chris Brown. I always thought that Henry’s attitude problem stemmed from the fact that he wanted to be a starter.
He’d have the same problem in Tennessee, it seems.
A week after having his lawyer tell San Antonio media that he was pursuing other options, Tom Benson said Tuesday that he is not planning to move the Saints.
“My plan right now is to stay in New Orleans and let my grand-daughter take the club over,” he said.
Benson also said he didn’t even want to consider other and possibly more lucrative offers from other cities.
“We’ve got a contract through 2010,” he said. “They’re the ones talking about breaking the contract. At no time did I say that we were going to leave or break a contract and I’m not going to say that now.”
Gov. Kathleen Blanco has been attempting to get Benson to renegotiate a deal giving the team $186 million over 10 years, saying the state cannot afford it. The contract was negotiated by then-Gov. Mike Foster and approved by the Legislature.
Benson recently canceled additional negotiations until after the 2005 season when the Saints have their first opportunity to negate the current deal and move by repaying the $81 million the team received during the first five years of the contract. The state can opt out of the deal after the 2007 season.
Here’s an idea: Agree to use some of the money to refurbish the Dome, then repay the Saints with the extra cash generated from the nicer and more fan-friendly stadium.
