Where the priorities lie

One hour into the State of the Union address, 3 minutes before it ended, the President spoke about New Orleans and Louisiana.

For 20 seconds.

Mainly to mention that New Orleans was a shithole before the storm.

    “A hopeful society comes to the aid of fellow citizens in times of
    suffering and emergency – and stays at it until they are back on their
    feet. So far the Federal government has committed 85 billion dollars to
    the people of the Gulf Coast and New Orleans. We are removing debris,
    repairing highways, and building stronger levees. We are providing
    business loans and housing assistance. Yet as we meet these immediate
    needs, we must also address deeper challenges that existed before the
    storm arrived. In New Orleans and in other places, many of our fellow
    citizens have felt excluded from the promise of our country. The answer
    is not only temporary relief, but schools that teach every child … and job
    skills that bring upward mobility … and more opportunities to own a home
    and start a business. As we recover from a disaster, let us also work for
    the day when all Americans are protected by justice, equal in hope, and
    rich in opportunity.”

  3. I live in the place that was briefly mentioned in W’s speech. That $85 billion check must be in the mail (the delivery of which still sucks), because there are still miles and miles of dark streets, non-functioning traffic lights, destroyed and abandoned cars, trucks, & boats littering the streets and neutral grounds. Piles of debris have smoldered for days and then spontaneously ignited because they’ve been sitting there for weeks. A major proposal (the Baker bill)to partially compensate property owners and lenders was rejected outright by W with no alternative proposed and then two days later he says N.O must have a plan before it can expect help. He said in Jackson Square that he would do whatever it took for as long as it took to rebuild. Empty words, and as an old Texas saying, “All hat and no cattle.”

  4. I am waiting for the schools that will educate every child. I got a call last week from a former CTK (my Catholic school) teacher who was now teaching in one of the new Charter schools of New Orleans. She was tired of teaching without textbooks or teacher’s manuals and was asking me if I had any extras I could send her. Yes, I am sure the check is in the mail along with the “No Child Left Behind” funds that Mr. President is so proud of. It is a sad day for New Orleans and for the rest of the country. Please pray…oops can’t do that in the public schools…for good weather and that no catastrophic storms hit your area.

  5. Don’t know if you noticed, but severe weather and a tornado(s?) were reported in Lakeview (my former home) early this AM (Feb 2). Before I went to work, I tried to drive thru the neighborhood. A cell phone tower was down across Veterans Blvd near the I-10/I-610 interchange, several large oak trees were down across Canal Blvd, preventing passage, many houses that survived K were now spread out across West End Blvd, & the few places with power had none. At least it stopped raining. I guess God is really pissed at us and is smiting us for all our wickedness and actually wanting to have Mardi Gras.
