I can’t fault Sean Payton for taking those knees, killing the clock, and having Carney kick the field goal to win. But I couldn’t get memories of John Carney in the Jacksonville game out of my head. What a way to finish the game.
The last Saints possession was an 8 minute drive. Want to beat the Eagles? Easy. Just don’t give their offense the ball and eat up the clock. That’s Dave’s strategy in Madden. Of course, it never really works for Dave because he doesn’t have the talent to sustain the drive.
Ron Jaworski picked the Saints as his number 4 team in football on SportsCenter, right below only the Bears, Chargers, and Colts. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the media treat the Saints like that. The talking heads are actually talking about the way the Saints are playing, rather than their “emotional performance.” Are we not a novelty anymore? Are we legitimate?
I almost wish we didn’t have a bye next week. Bring on the Ravens. Let’s get another win over one of the “good” teams. Oh wait, Kyle Boller is QB in Baltimore again. I bet they aren’t considered good anymore.
Thanks to Kent, I am able to add this picture of the rest of the Saints Season. Bear in mind, it is a slide, so we’ll have lots of fun on our way down. But our hood will get stuck at the top, so there will be some serious choking as well.
I find your lack of faith disturbing.
I said it was going to be fun. Besides they started out 6-1 a few years back, and missed the playoffs. I have this friend here in Omaha who is a Saints fan, and that ‘s all he ever talks about in relation to the Saints. He says that they lost all those games at the end of that season because Aaron Brooks refused to sit down, even though he was hurt, because he was afraid of Delhomme taking his job. He also thinks that Brooks should have run more. That guy was crazy. He got escorted out of Goodwill two days before he was supposed to be done working here. I guess he flat refused to do anything, once he put in his two weeks notice. He was a great guy though.
If only Brooks had sat down and Jake had taken his job….
That probably means that Jim Haslett would still be our coach. Eek.
Or if only Brooks had started throwing passes towards the line of scrimmage.
I watched the Saints game, we had it live over here. They look pretty good to my untrained eye. Good running backs, solid QB, decent receivers and an OK defense (although I think if McNabb had got back on the field in the last 10 minutes Philly would have gone on to win, and I don’t think the D is quite there yet to be honest).
I too was looking at the clock run down thinking, “Damn, they’re going to trust Carney with a time expiring FG!”
Payton’s expressions right at the end as Carney was trotting out were priceless – trying to get the crowd to quieten down, flapping his arms around like mad. lol.
Oh, and Philly’s DBs clearing don’t know how to cover the centre of the field. Joe Horn was open all night.
That’s great! We’re internationally televised now.
If the second half McNabb had shown up in the first half, the game would have been different.
I’m not surprised a person in Nebraska can’t recognize a solid, well-coached football team. There’s so many differences in the way the Saints play compared to in the previous season: Penalized far less; a balanced offensive attack with aggressive and surprising play-calling; better tackling and a sense of deterimination. All of that should be credited to Coach Payton.
But the biggest change in the Saints is simply — NFL MVP Drew Brees.
The combined record of the teams New Orleans has defeated (including the 4-2 Eagles) is 9-13. I rest my case.
Sean Payton is the best thing to happen to New Orleans in a long time. He is the kind of man that a parent would want their child to model. His honor and class will one day rival Tom Landry’s. He has high expectations for his team, not only playwise, but character-wise and along the lines of sportsmanship. I haven’t seen that in a long time. Our illustrious mayor and other politicians could learn a lesson from Coach Payton. I am saving a spot on my refrigerator for Coach Payton’s picture….right between Tom Landry and my Jake.
Here’s a nice one for your fridge:
And I love you anyway…..
